Tragedy Strikes OAU: Student Confirmed Dead Amid Search for Missing Colleague
The Obafemi Awowo University (OAU) community is in mourning following the confirmation of a dentistry student’s death. This tragic news comes as the university and the Students’ Union continue their search for Dorcas Oseghale, a student who has been missing for five days.
In a statement released on August 13, 2025, the Great Ife Students’ Union expressed its profound sorrow over the loss, calling it a tragedy that has deeply impacted the campus. The Union extended its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and fellow students of the deceased, with a special message of condolence to the Dental Students’ Association.
The statement also brought attention to the immense academic pressures students face and the critical importance of mental health. It urged students to seek support, reminding them that the university’s health center provides confidential counseling services. The Union stressed that no student should feel alone in their struggles and that mental health challenges are a serious and valid concern.
Looking ahead, the Students’ Union has committed to advocating for better mental health resources on campus. They plan to work with university management, staff, the health center, and the Division of Student Affairs to dismantle the stigma around mental health and prevent similar tragedies in the future. The statement was issued by Public Relations Officer Olowosile Joseph Oreoluwa and signed by Secretary General Habeeb Oke Isa and President Adelani David Oluwatodimu.
